Per capita retail sales area provision is an important identifier for the market development and maturity amongst individual European countries. The total retail area of a country is divided by per individual person in the country. If a country has a large population, this may not necessarily mean that the retail sales area per person is also large. Turkey, for example, has a relatively large population, but the lowest retail sales area provision, with a score of 0.68 per square meter. This is likely to be due to the lower amount or size of retail stores in the country.
Countries such as Austria have a low population, as well as large retail sales area per capita, giving them a a high score, like Austria's 1.62 square meters per person.
