Between 2006 and 2016, the general government debt in the Netherlands increased from approximately 260 billion euros in 2006 to a value of approximately 434 billion euros in 2016. In 2014, the government debt was at his highest level. Since then, the ruling government coalition of the centre-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and social democratic Labour party (PvDA) took measures to reduce the public debt.
