B2B e-commerce in Latin America - statistics & facts

Less than one percent of the global business-to-business (B2B) gross merchandise volume (GMV) is generated in Latin America and the Caribbean. Although the B2B e-commerce market is in its infancy in the region, Latin American countries host several international service and technology providers for e-commerce businesses.

Brazil is the biggest market

Between 2021 and 2022, the value of the B2B e-commerce market nearly tripled in Brazil, reaching 61 billion Brazilian reals. This represents even more outstanding growth, considering that the overall B2B market did not follow the trend and remained stable. Brazil is home to Infracommerce, a provider of e-commerce software technologies. The public company has seen increasing gross merchandise volumes on the hosted stores, as well as double-digit growth in the B2B segment. Infracommerce competes with VTEX, which operates mainly in Brazil but successfully expanded its commerce and retail tech business to other countries in the region.

Timid signs of B2B growth

In Colombia, e-commerce can benefit from a large pool of B2B businesses, representing 60 percent of all startups based in the country, not to mention the ones operating on hybrid models that include B2C or business-to-government (B2G) segments, too. In Mexico, the percentage of wholesalers selling online has jumped compared to 2019, especially in the perfume and cosmetics segment. Looking at the most used sales channels, no clear winner is emerging. Mail orders and customer service centers are still key, but the usability of social media appeals to nearly four in ten B2B organizations.

Latin America as a cross-border destination

In the absence of established pure B2B players, Latin America is a cross-border destination for foreign groups that already expanded in more established markets like North America or Europe. Nearly 40 percent of B2B buyers working for Brazilian companies purchased on Amazon Business. In turn, Alibaba seemed to be less popular, although figures on mobile downloads indicate that the Chinese B2B marketplace can count on a potential user base of 2.6 million in the Latin American region.
