Where The International Space Station's Visitors Come From

India is sending its first astronaut to the International Space Station on Wednesday. Shubhanshu Shukla will join Tibor Kapu (Hungary), commander Peggy Whitson (U.S.) and Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Poland) on their journey into space.

The modular space station has now been occupied for over 24 years - a record for the longest continuous human presence in low Earth orbit. According to data from NASA, over 280 individuals representing 23 countries and five International Partners have visited the ISS, the vast majority of whom have been from the United State - 169 in total. Russia has the second-highest total at 63 while Japan comes third with 11.

39-year-old Shukla will be the third astronaut of Indian origin to reach orbit, following after Rakesh Sharma in 1984 and Kalpana Chawla in 1997 and a fatal trip in 2003.
