AI Could Put Up to 130,000 Federal Jobs At Risk

AI has the potential to eliminate over 130,000 employees over the next decade across more than 80 occupations in in the federal government, according to a new study by the Partnership for Public Service and the IBM Center for Business of Government. The agencies and positions most effected by this change deal with finance, such as the Department of Treasury.

Around twenty thousand IRS tax examiners and agents are estimated to be impacted by artificial intelligence within the next decade. Budget analysts and accountants are the next two sets of jobs expected to be greatly impacted by the further incorporation of artificial intelligence into the federal government landscape. Even food and aviation inspectors are going to be reshaped by the automation that intelligent systems will crate, changing what certain jobs entail and who does them.

While the adoption of AI is projected to cause big shakeups in the federal government, not every industry is expecting dramatic job losses in the same way. Many marketing and advertising agencies aren’t looking at AI as a human replacement tool, though CEOs across across a wide array of industries are torn by exactly how artificial intelligence will impact the job market.
