Coup Attempts Are Mostly Unsuccessful

On Thursday, the Sudanese military ended the 30-year tule of strongman Omar al-Bashir. Military vehicles entered the Khartoum compound housing the defence ministry, military headquarders and al-Bashir's residence. State media channels were then interrupted by defence minister Awad Ibn Auf who announced the toppling of the regime.

Figures from the Center for Systematic Peace (CSP) show that Thursday's events were the 33rd coup d'état in Sudan's history but only five of them have proven successful. During the announcement of the coup by Ibn Auf, he said that Sudan had been suffering from "poor management, corruption, and an absence of justice" before apologising for the violence that occurred. More often than not, coup attempts mostly end in failure as the following infographic shows. Thailand is an exception however, experiencing a higher number of successful coups.
