Where Global Poverty Is Rampant

The United Nations Development Programme has released its 2019 Multidimensional Poverty Index which sheds light on the number of people around the world living in severe multidimensional poverty. That term doesn't just refer to financial poverty. Rather, it also takes other factors into account such as poor health/malnutrition, lack of clean water/electricity access, poor education, etc. The research found that there are 1.3 billion people living in multidimensional poverty in 101 countries - 23 percent of the population.

The following infographic takes a closer look at the findings, focusing on the top-10 countries with the highest rates of severe multidimensional poverty in the report with all 10 in Africa. Niger and South Sudan have the highest share of the population living in multidimensional poverty at 74.8 and 74.3 percent respectively. Chad has the third highest share at 66 percent.
