Trump's International Travels Mapped

U.S. President Donald Trump is headed to the United Kingdom for his second official state visit on Tuesday. Trump and the first lady are scheduled to meet with King Charles and Queen Camilla as well as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other government officials. While Wednesday's visit to Windsor Castle will be including a lot of pomp and ceremony, Thursday's political meetings will be circling around tariffs and a new technology partnership. Potentially due to his non-consecutive presidential terms, Trump will be the first non-royal in modern times to take part in two state visits to the UK. But the visit is also seen as Britain courting Trump in the context of the two countries' ongoing negotations around trade deals. Trump has visited the UK five times, more than any other country, including in July when he also met with Keir Starmer as well as European Union President Ursula von der Leyen.

Trump has received an (inofficial) invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin when the pair met in August in Alaska. Traveling to Russia was something Trump said he could see "possibly happening".

Though unlikely, a visit to Russia would add another country to the list of official trips Trump has taken. He has visited several countries in Asia (compared to just one in Latin America) and paid many visits to European nations, including four visits to France and two each to Italy, Switzerland and Belgium. Germany, on the other hand, also a long-time U.S. ally, has only seen one Trump visit, for the G20 summit in Hamburg in 2017. A bilateral visit with the German chancellor is still not on the agenda, which is highly unusual given the close cooperation of the two countries in the past. Trump has also stopped by at Ramstein airbase in South-West Germany in 2018, but this visit is not counted as a visit to German territory by the State Department.

Another country that Trump has frequented is Japan (two bilateral visits and one summit visit). The most unusual country that Trump has visited is certainly North Korea, which the president walked into for about a minute when meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the Korean Demilitarized Zone. No other sitting president had stepped foot in the country before, but the visit was not counted as such by the Office of the Historian at the State Department.
