Smoking rates in Germany

Germany is the only country in the European Union where cigarette advertising is still allowed and the country's doctors have renewed calls to finally ban it completely. It is already banned on TV, radio and in print but tobacco companies can still advertise their products on billboards and in cinemas. President of the European Respiratory Society, Tobias Welte, has described Germany as a "developing country" when it comes to regulating tobacco.

So how many Germans actually do smoke? The most recent data comes from the Robert Koch Institut (in German) and it shows that although smoking rates are falling, they remain relatively high at 18.6 percent for women and 26.4 percent for men. Bremen is the German federal state with the highest smoking rates at 24.2 percent for women and 30.9 percent for men in 2017. https://www.statista.com/topics/1600/smoking/
