Brazil World Cup Brings Goals Galore

After 48 of the 64 matches of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil have been completed, it is safe to say that it's one of the most entertaining World Cup's in recent memory. We've witnessed the fall of the incumbent champion, we've seen football giants fall and most importantly, we have seen goals, goals, goals.

During the group stage, we've seen an average of 2.83 goals scored per game, a number last topped more than 40 years ago in Mexico 1970. The presumably ever-lasting record for the most goals scored per game is held by the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. In the tournament, that saw Germany clinch its first World Cup title in what became known as the Miracle of Bern, the teams scored 5.38 times per match on average. The lowest-scoring World Cup thus far (2.21 goals per match) was the 1990 World Cup in Italy, which coincidentally was also won by Germany.
