Americans Tend to Opt for Hotels When Traveling

When going on vacation, U.S. adults are most likely to opt for a hotel, as far as different accommodation types are concerned. According to a survey by Statista Consumer Insights, 41 percent of vacationers who had traveled for private reasons in the past year stayed in a hotel. Meanwhile, 16 percent of respondents stayed in a vacation apartment or house through platforms like Airbnb. Campervan rentals were less popular, booked by just 13 percent of adults. There has been a notable shift since a survey wave carried out between July 2024 and June 2025, when 54 percent of respondents had selected hotels, and just 6 percent had used campervans, possibly reflecting a shift towards cheaper vacation experiences amid heightened costs of living.

In an international comparison, hotels tended to be the most popular pick of the offered options. In the United Kingdom, hotels were booked by 47 percent of private travelers, with package vacations and apartments or vacation houses the next most popular choices, at 26 percent and 18 percent, respectively. In Germany too, the largest group at 40 percent of respondents said they had booked a hotel for travel in the past 12 months. There, vacation apartments or houses were slightly more popular, rented by 26 percent of respondents.

Statista also asked respondents which types of trips they have taken in the past 12 months. U.S. private travelers were most likely to say family and friends visits (54 percent), followed by beach vacations (32 percent) and city trips (30 percent), and nature or outdoors vacations (23 percent.)
