Internal displacement
Sudan Has by Far the Most Internally Displaced Persons
In 2024, the world witnessed a record estimate of 83.4 million people living in internal displacement - a stark increase from around 75 million the previous year. According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center, this surge is driven by a combination of ongoing conflicts, political instability and the growing impact of extreme weather events on vulnerable populations. The chart below shows the countries with the largest estimated number of internally displaced persons in 2024, with Sudan standing out as the territory with the most severe crisis, based on this metric. Over 11 million people were internally displaced in Sudan at the end of the year 2024, due to escalating civil war and violence. It is the highest number ever recorded for a single country by the IDMC. Other countries facing acute displacement include the DR Congo, Yemen, Myanmar and Ukraine, where armed conflicts continue to uproot millions, while in Afghanistan, economic collapse and natural disasters have compounded the humanitarian crisis.
