Mental Health: The Biggest Health Challenge of Our Time?

Mental health is deeply personal, yet it is also one of the defining public health challenges of our time. For those affected, its consequences can touch every part of daily life, making seemingly simple tasks seem insurmountable. But the toll of mental health problems doesn’t stop there. In a 30-country survey conducted by Ipsos in 2025, 45 percent of respondents identified mental health as one of the biggest health problems their country currently faces, ranking it above conditions such as cancer and heart disease, the two most common causes of death across 37 OECD countries in 2023. This growing recognition is closely linked to increasing openness around mental well-being: as stigma declines and awareness grows, mental health is becoming a central focus for health systems and policymakers.
