Female Genital Mutilation

Where FGM Is Banned By Law

In Ireland, a couple has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years and four years and nine months for the female genital mutilation of their then 21-month-old daughter. The landmark conviction at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was the first in the history of the Irish state. Legislation was introduced criminalizing FGM in 2012 and it carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years.

In 2012, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution calling for a global ban on female genital mutilation. This map is based on data from the United Nations Population Fund and it shows the state of legislation outlawing FGM worldwide in 2019.
