Tribunals

Ireland's most expensive tribunals

In the Republic of Ireland, a tribunal is a powerful form of statutory inquiry. Yesterday, Taoiseach Enda Kenny confirmed he would establish a public inquiry into allegations that a smear campaign was waged against garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe. In recent years, many notable Irish tribunals have lasted for years and come with a hefty price tag. Up until now, the Mahon Tribunal which ran from 1997 to 2012 was the most expensive Irish tribunal by far, costing the state €159 million.
