The US State Department has released its annual Trafficking in Persons Report, finding that the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the risks for vulnerable and marginalized populations who could be exposed to human trafficking. Even though borders were closed and travel grew more difficult last year, the crisis did not end human trafficking. In fact, it resulted in criminals adapting their existing tactics to take advantage of the unique circumstances. The report states that there were 9,877 prosecutions for human trafficking offenses last year with 3,969 convictions.
