Global methane emissions from the oil and gas sector 2000-2030
Global oil and gas operations produced over 80 million metric tons of methane (CH4) in 2022. Methane emissions from oil operations have remained relatively stable over the past two decades, whereas those related to natural gas operations have risen dramatically. Under the IEA's Net Zero Scenario, methane emissions from oil and gas operations could drop by almost 80 percent by 2030 to less than 20 million metric tons. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 28 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.
