Current Olympic Records in athletic events by country 1968-2016
Going into the Tokyo Games, athletes from the United States have set the highest number of current Olympic Records in athletic events. Out of 24 possible records in men's events, US athletes currently hold seven of these (although the Olympic Decathlon record is shared with a Czech athlete), while female athletes from the US currently hold five of the 23 records available. Athletes from Kenya hold the second highest number of athletic Olympic Records, with a total of five; all of which are in middle- or distance-running events. When combined, athletes representing the Soviet Union and Russia hold a total of seven athletic Olympic Records, six of which are held by female athletes. The longest standing Olympic record in athletics belongs to Bob Beamon of the US, with a distance of 8.9 meters in the Men's Long Jump in 1968.
