Number of people missing or killed due to earthquakes and tsunamis Japan 2011-2021
In 2021, there were no people reported missing or killed due to earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan. Figures were highest in 2011, in which around 22.3 thousand fatalities or missing cases were reported. That year, the Great East Japan Earthquake, also known as the Tohoku Earthquake, occurred. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan and caused a tsunami that led to the meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The damage caused by surging water was more destructive than the earthquake, as it destroyed many Japanese cities.
