U.S. policies restricting guns in public locations 2024, by state
In the United States, one's ability to carry a firearm in public may be dependent upon their state of residence. As of 2024, 34 states did not allow teachers or the general public to carry guns in K-12 schools, while 15 states prohibited the concealed carry of guns in bars. However, some states have also worked to reduce gun restrictions in public locations. Although guns are still prohibited in most U.S. colleges and universities, 12 states have now passed legislation requiring these institutions to allow concealed guns to be carried on campus, despite increasingly high rates of school shootings occurring nationwide.
