UK stocks and shares as insurance investment 2007-2014

This statistic displays the value of United Kingdom (UK) stocks and shares, both "ordinary" and "preferred" stocks, held by general and long-term insurance companies as investment holdings from 2007 to 2014. Investment in ordinary stocks was much higher in years 2007 to 2009 than later on, but it remained more substantial than investment in preferred stock. In 2013, 208 billion British pounds was invested in ordinary stock, and 187 billion in other/preferred stock.

Two types of stock exist, ordinary (also called common) and preferred. Per definition "ordinary stock holders cannot be paid dividends until all preferred stock dividends are paid in full. In the event of bankruptcy, common stock investors receive any remaining funds after bondholders, creditors (including employees), and preferred stock holders are paid. On the other hand, common shares on average perform better than preferred shares or bonds over time."
