Share of consumers using online banking in the Netherlands 2016-2017
In 2016, the Netherlands was the country with the highest response of people who reported to already use mobile banking. The share of smartphone or tablet users who use banking on the go has increased throughout the years in the Benelux region. Mobile banking subscriptions in Belgium, for example, increased from from 140,000 in 2011 to 3.3 million in 2015. In the Netherlands, approximately 92 percent of the teenagers aged 15 to 16 years old used online banking to check their balance.
Despite this, smartphones and tablets are less used for remote payments. In the fourth quarter of 2016, the turnover of remote payments initiated with a smartphone or tablet consisted approximately 1.4 percent of the total turnover in remote payments in the Netherlands.
