Netflix Falls Short of Own Record at the Emmys

When Netflix earned its first Emmy nominations in 2013, it went into the award show as a dark horse. The fact that the company ended up winning three awards for “House of Cards” that year was groundbreaking, as it was the first time that an online exclusive won television’s biggest prize. However, over the past seven years, Netflix has become a regular at the prestigious award show, upstaging many traditional television networks.

Yesterday, the nominees for the 75th Emmy Awards season were announced, with Netflix receiving a total of 103 nominations. 2022 had seen a fall in both the number of shows nominated and the number of shows that won prizes since one year prior, when Netflix had broken its own record with 44 wins. The fact that 26 Emmys are now considered disappointing for Netflix goes a long way in showing how far the company has taken its content game over the past decade.

The 2023 ceremony is scheduled to air on September 18, although an ongoing WGA strike and a looming SAG-AFTRA strike mean the show could be delayed this year.
