Who Contributes Most Troops to NATO Missions?

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been the multi-national framework organization for many military missions. One of the most prominent NATO-led missions was the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) which was deployed to Afghanistan until December 2014. According to data compiled by the Munich Security Conference (MSC), this mission was 64 percent American, when taking troop contributions as a measuring stick.

NATO’s current follow-up mission to Afghanistan, Resolute Support (RSM), is a smaller force overall and non-US manpower contributions have increased. KFOR in Kosovo in the Balkans, which has been running for almost 20 years, is a more European mission. All military missions are in flux, so troop levels and contributions vary from time to time, but these snapshots taken at specific times depict general trends in contribution levels.
