Facebook Trumps MAGA on Political Ad Spend

Who is capitalizing on the advertising space on Facebook? Well, Facebook is advertising on Facebook. Between May and October of 2018, Facebook has spent about $12.5 million on political advertisements to promote its renewed efforts at election integrity. Facebook has had to answer to Congress twice this year for dropping the ball on who is placing political advertisements on their platform.

Beto for Texas is the runner up in political advertising on Facebook, hitting just above $5 million. Beto O’Rourke is running against Republican Senator Ted Cruz, a closely watched, competitive election in a traditionally red state. The third biggest ad spender in the final election months of 2018 was the Make America Great Again Committee, President Trump’s campaign organization. MAGA spent over $3 million dollars on political ads on Facebook, even though Trump is not up for reelection until 2020. MAGA spent about a third of what Facebook spent on political advertisements.
