Driving from the UK to Europe By The Numbers

If the United Kingdom crashes out of the European Union without a deal, drivers travelling to the continent or across the Irish border will need proof of insurance called a Green Card. The Association of British Insurers say that the card has to be ordered a month before travel. European insurance authorities have agreed to waive the need for the card even in the case of a no-deal Brexit but this has not been confirmed by the European Commission.

Given how serious the ramifications of a no-deal Brexit could be for British drivers, how many of them actually cross the Irish border or visit the continent every year? The following infographic uses data reported by the BBC and it provides an overview. In total, 110 million cars and trucks cross the Irish border every year while Eurotunnel Shuttle services transport 4.2 million vehicles in both directions. Excluding Northern Ireland, 2.4 million trucks travel from Britain to mainland Europe annually.
