In 2003, the mayor of Berlin labeled the city "poor but sexy" due to low rents and a broad arts scene. Today, the German capital has seen its real estate market develop rapidly and propery prices have increased by 120 percent since 2004. Immobilienscout24 compared housing costs as a share of puschasing power per household in Berlin by district and the results can be seen on the following infographic. In Kreuzberg, residents had to spend 26.3 percent of their income on housing in 2013 and by 2016, that had increased to 32.1 percent.
