App Usage

Top Smartphone App Categories People Report Using

Three-quarters of U.S. consumers reported using internet browsers on their smartphone, directly followed with about seven in ten reportedly using social media and e-mail apps on their smartphones. While these self-reported amounts are interesting, what people say they do and what they actually do can be different.

Facebook announced earlier this month that it would be paying people in order to study how people use apps. Participants will download an app called Stud, so that Facebook can examine what apps people use and how they use them. Previously, Facebook has done this without paying users or letting them consent to be studied. Onavo was the company’s first known attempt in 2013 to better understand which apps were popular and collect data on how people interact with them.

A typical U.S. adults spends over three hours a day on their phone, the most of any other type of digital media. Where those users are spending time is of great interest to the businesses that try and grab and hold onto users’ attention.
