Hong Kong Protests

Support for Hong Kong Leader Carrie Lam is Dwindling

Protest against the government and one of their proposed policies in particular have tarnished the reputation of Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, causing her to lose public support quickly - and at a much faster rate than her predecessors.

According to the University of Hong Kong Public Opinion Programme, Lam's approval rating was at a meagre 38.1 percent most recently, while she was 24 months into her term. This was way lower than those ratings of predecessors Tung Chee-hwa and Donald Tsang and even lower than the ratings of Leung Chun-ying, who started off at a much lower ratings level when he took office in 2012.

Lam is facing opposition because of a proposed bill that would allow for extradition proceedings from Hong Hong to Mainland China. Mass protests have been going on in the Chinese special administrative region since June, with hundreds of thousands of people turning out at the same time.
