Brexit: UK Leadership Is Losing Public Support

Brexit looks like it will be delayed once again after Boris Johnson suffered another Commons defeat and paused his attempt to get his deal through parliament. If the EU now proposes delaying Brexit until January, Boris Johnson is likely to push for a new general election and the earliest it could take place is Thursday, 28 November. A Gallup poll published this week shows that the UK's public is now almost equally likely to approve of both the EU's and their own country's leadership.

In 2018, 47 percent of people in the UK approved of their country's leadership and that has now fallen to 41 percent. Meanwhile, approval of EU leadership has been ebbing up from 37 percent in 2016 to 43 percent today. The research also found that Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales tend to have a more favorable view of EU leadership (48 percent versus 38 percent for the UK) while 41 percent of the public in England favor both.
