Goodbye, New York

New York is not the place people want to be. The Big Apple has experienced the biggest net domestic out-migration over the past decade, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. More than 1.4 million people left the state. California and Illinois also saw an exodus of residents, with 912,000 and 865,900 people leaving, respectively.

The most popular states for former New Yorkers to call home are Florida, New Jersey and North Carolina, according to tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service, which was analyzed by Empire Center for Public Policy.

Californians are heading to Texas, Nevada and Washington, while Illinoisans are choosing Florida, Texas and Indiana.

So why are so many people leaving the blue states? According to Bloomberg, it could be the high taxes.
