Box Office in the U.S.

Sonic Wins at the Box Office

It might not be the biggest box office movie of all time, but Sonic The Hedgehog had the highest-grossing opening weekend sales at the U.S. box office among films adapted from video games. The flick, which stars James Marsden and Jim Carrey, raked in $58 million, according to Box Office Mojo. It bested the opening weekends of other video game-inspired blockbusters, like Pokémon: Detective Pikachu ($54.4 million) and Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider ($47.7 million).

The blue hedgehog clinched the top spot for a second week in a row, garnering an estimated $26.3 million during its sophomore weekend. In total, Sonic The Hedgehog has grossed more than $106 million at the domestic box office. According to Box Office Pro, it’s already the fourth greatest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. To surpass the record set by Pokémon: Detective, Sonic The Hedgehog will have to earn more than $144 million domestically.
