The Status Of The UN's Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapons

The United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has come into force but it will remain largely symbolic as the world's nuclear-armed states have not signed it. The treaty was ratified by a 50th country in late October of last year, paving the way for it to come into effect. UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres called the development “the culmination of a worldwide movement to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons.”
