No Smoking in This Area

Of Statista Consumer Insights survey respondents, a majority (63 percent) of adults in the United States said that they do not smoke cigarettes. In an international comparison, however, other countries can boast even better figures. In Japan, for example, around 79 percent of survey participants stated that they were non-smokers (at least of cigarettes), while in Nigeria around 85 percent of all respondents said they abstain from smoking. This is despite the fact that a pack of cigarettes in both countries is comparatively inexpensive at the equivalent of less than five dollars.

The main reason for the low proportion of smokers in Nigeria is the aggressive political action against tobacco consumption in recent years. For example, a ban on smoking in public places, a ban on all forms of direct and indirect advertising, and a ban on the sale of cigarettes within 1,000 meters of smoke-free areas.
