Violent Crimes This Year Are Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

Data from the Council on Criminal Justice shows that the number of violent crimes reported in 42 cities in the United States was down in the first six months of this year compared to the first half of 2019. As the following chart shows, the number of homicides, aggravated assaults, gun assaults, sexual assaults, robberies and carjackings have each fallen. Homicide was 14 percent lower in the first half of 2025 compared to the first half of 2019, while robbery was 30 percent lower. Where homicides, gun assaults and carjackings had particularly increased in 2021, 2022 and 2023 compared to before the pandemic, this has backpeddled this year.

In terms of property offenses, residential burglary (-47 percent) and larceny (-19 percent) were both among the offenses to have seen incidents decrease since pre-pandemic. However, motor vehicle theft was up 25 percent in the first half of 2025 compared to the first of 2019. Washington D.C. was one of the cities analyzed for each of the offenses selected for this chart.
