Working In Hospitality Is More Than A Summer Job

The 2025 European Accommodation Barometer identified high costs, operational constraints, and staff turnover as key barriers to greater investment in training. Yet the results of survey findings reported in the issue breif, Upskilling European Hospitality, suggest a more nuanced dynamic: nearly seven in ten hospitality professionals (69%) see their work as a long-term career, not just a stopover, and 83% want to move into leadership roles.

Rather than a lack of interest, the biggest barrier appears to be insufficient skills development and progression options. Without these, ambitious employees will inevitably seek opportunities elsewhere. The good news is that employers are open to change and half would encourage staff to complete online training that is affordable, high-quality, and in their local language, especially if subsidies and quality assurance were available. Most importantly, employees are ready to engage: 88% say they would likely take part in online training if offered.
