Monarchy

Europe's richest royals

Since the 1970s, the Dutch royal family pays taxes on their personal wealth, including shares and savings. Earlier this month Dutch news service RTL Nieuws revealed a secret agreement in which the royals were compensated for these taxes paid, causing a new debate in society about the costs of the Dutch monarchy in the Netherlands. The House of Orange-Nassau is among the richest royal families in the world, and yet their personal wealth is dwarfed by that of Liechtenstein's ruler, Prince Hans-Adam II. Prince Albert II of Monaco and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom both also have fortunes considerably larger than Dutch monarch King Willem-Alexander.
