Portugal: banks ROA by quarter 2023

The return on assets (ROA) of the Portuguese banking industry presented an increasing trend between 2014 and 2023, despite several fluctuations. The lowest value was recorded in the last quarter of 2016, when the ROA stood at negative 0.7 percent. The ROA stood at 0 percent during the second and fourth quarters of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the ROA of the banking sector in Portugal increased significantly and reached 1.4 percent in the last quarter.
