This statistic provides information about the most popular websites visited by teenagers in the United States as of May 2012. During the survey period in May 2012, Facebook was the most popular site with 89.5 percent of teens using it, followed by Twitter (48.7 percent).

Out of the current 13 to 17 year old generation of teenagers in the United States, more than 90 percent are able to access the internet on a regular basis. Social media sites are especially popular among teens as the spread of mobile devices, as well as the shift to mobile social networks, enable constant communication between peers.

Popular social networks are Facebook, Twitter and Google+. User-generated content sites such as Tumblr, 4chan or Pinterest also proved popular, as well as location-based services such as Foursquare. Facebook adoption among teens is almost universal due to the social network’s unparalleled reach as well as the varied possibilities of social interaction through status updates, photo sharing, private messaging and social gaming. Many schools and other academic institutions have also started adapt to teenage internet usage and have begun to incorporate Facebook groups and networks into their classroom experience.

In order to protect underage users, most social networks have set minimum age requirements at registration, which are frequently circumvented by teenagers lying about their age online.
