There were a total of 32,150 health clubs in the United States in 2013, an increase of over 2,000 on the figure from 2012. This means that the United States has more fitness centers than any other country in the world. Brazil has a similarly high number as it is home to over 30,000 fitness centers. All other countries in the world have fewer than 8,000 fitness clubs, with a total of just over 6,000 in the United Kingdom. The health clubs in the United States had a combined membership of almost 53 million people in 2013, the highest figure to-date.
There are a further 6,000 health clubs in Canada, bringing the total number for North America to 38,400. This makes the continent the third largest region in the world for health clubs. The highest concentration of fitness centers can be found in Latin America, where there are a total of 53,600 clubs. Europe is the second largest market with just short of 50,000 fitness centers. In total there were over 165,000 health and fitness clubs around the world in 2013.
The global health club industry was worth an estimated 78 billion U.S. dollars in 2013. Of this total revenue, some 25 billion U.S. dollars was generated in the North American market and a further 33 billion U.S. dollars in Europe.
