Connecting IoT to the smartphone

The “Internet of Things” affects how we live and work. It is a growing concept with myriad complexities with the internet as its foundation. Like the rest of the world, costs to connect and build technology are constantly decreasing in India, making it easier for tech companies to penetrate markets. IoT devices are set to see significant growth, from about 200 million units in 2016, to over 2.7 billion in 2020, according to NASSCOM, and is estimated to become a 15 billion dollar industry.

But what is the public understanding of the IoT concept generally? In a survey conducted by Tata Communications, most urban Indians currently associate IoT with smartphones. As the source notes, familiarity with smartphones and the high-impact nature of its mobility features mean that this is still the best understood IoT device in the country.
