Tropical Storm Lane Brings Rain and Records

Tropical storm Lane blew through Hawaii this weekend, dropping a historic amount of rain across the state. One weather station in Mountainview, Hawaii topped 51.85 inches of rain, the third most precipitation from any storm in the United States.

The enormous amount of rain has brought with it flash floods, landslides, strong winds, and storm surges, though that has not stopped Hawaii’s famous surfers from trying to catch some waves amid the debris. Damage has overall been minimal, consisting of some flooding in residential homes and roadways. The storm was downgraded from a category 3 hurricane to a tropical storm prior to making landfall, though the storm was slow-moving across the island.

The state has been managing multiple natural disasters this year, with the Kilauea volcano erupting for weeks on end and destroying 700 homes in its wake. Tropical storm Lane has had little to no effect on the volcanic eruptions.
