Six in Ten U.S. Adults Support Selfie Stick Ban

Selfie sticks are frowned upon by most people, with nearly six in ten U.S. adults supporting a ban on the devices. A selfie stick is a tool that allows users to prop their phones on the ends of a retractable pole so that the picture-taker can angle their smartphone cameras above their heads for a more flattering angle.

Back in 2015, Disney banned selfie sticks from all its parks, citing safety concerns for visitors and staff. In addition to potentially giving unsuspecting visitors a whack in the head if the stick were to fall or be wielded carelessly, the long poles can also create issues on rides. Selfie sticks are long enough to reach outside of a ride’s car and hit the machinery, causing potential machine malfunction and safety issues. Outside of Disney, many other places have instated selfie bans, including Wimbledon, the National Gallery and, most recently, the Spice Girls Murrayfield concert.
