Covid-19 Has Cost Europe's Top Soccer Clubs Billions

UEFA has released the twelfth edition of The European Club Footballing Landscape report which has provided an in-depth insight into how the pandemic has impacted all tiers of European soccer. The research projects that top clubs are set to lose some €7.2 billion in revenue. Of that figure, €3.6 billion is expected to be lost from gate receipts, €2.4 billion will be lost from sponsorship and commercial deals, while €1.2 billion worth of broadcasting revenue will also be lost.

This actually represents the lowest range estimate and losses could end up being as high as €8.2 billion. Despite the devastating impact of the pandemic which also led to 210 million fewer matchday supporters, UEFA states that overall interest in European club soccer remains higher than ever. As well as that, record television viewing figures, record numbers of new club investors and a rebound in club web traffic all point to a bright future when stadiums open their doors again.
