Africa's Vaccination Status

On 24 February 2021, the first COVAX vaccine shipments reached Accra, Ghana. One year later, more than 200 million doses have been administered so far, but few of the African countries can be said to have a good vaccination coverage rate, as this infographic based on data from Health Policy Watch shows.

The greatest progress in vaccination has been made in the island states of Seychelles and Mauritius, where around 84 and 78 percent of the population, respectively, have received at least one Covid vaccination. However, the progress is only comparable to the mainland to a limited extent, as the island states have a much easier time logistically than the larger African countries due to their small size and population.

More than half of the African countries, predominantly in the center of the continent, have vaccination rates of less than 20 percent. With 66.5 percent first-time vaccinations, Morocco is the strongest on the mainland. The lowest proportion of the population with at least one vaccination dose is recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo - here, with about 600,000 people, only about 0.7 percent of the population is vaccinated.
