Gerrymandering: Majority Wants a Commission & Public Input

A recent survey by YouGov shows that a majority of U.S. adults would support introducing measures requiring redistricting to be conducted by a nonpartisan redistricting commission. Out of 18,217 surveyed adults, 59 percent said they would support such a move, including 38 percent who would strongly support it. Only 11 percent of adults said they would oppose it, while 30 percent said they did not know.

The polling company also asked respondents whether they thought it was a good idea to require public input to be involved when it comes to proposed congressional and legislative voting districts. Nearly two thirds (65 percent) said they would support it, as just 10 percent said they would oppose it and 25 percent said they were not sure.

Views were more mixed on whether or not respondents thought legislative districts are drawn fairly in the United States. Where 34 percent said they thought the lines were drawn fairly, 35 percent said unfairly and 31 percent said they were unsure.
