Nuclear Reactor Pipelines: Where Projects Are Concentrated
Nuclear energy is seeing renewed investment worldwide, though projects remain highly concentrated in a few key markets. As of April 2026, 74 reactors are under construction in 13 countries (excluding suspended projects in Japan, Ukraine and Brazil), while roughly 120 more are planned, according to data from the World Nuclear Association.
China dominates by a wide margin, with 39 reactors under construction and another 41 planned, underscoring its central role in global nuclear expansion and, more broadly, in meeting rising energy demand. Russia follows at a distance, combining a smaller domestic pipeline (7 reactors under construction) with a large number of planned projects (23). India also stands out, with 8 reactors under construction and 14 more planned, as it seeks to scale up its nuclear capacity.
In Europe, activity is more limited but still notable. The United Kingdom has 2 reactors under construction and 3 planned, while countries such as Poland and Romania are preparing new nuclear programs, with 7 and 8 reactors planned, respectively. Sweden has also announced plans to re-enter nuclear expansion, with 5 reactors in the pipeline. Elsewhere, projects are concentrated in emerging nuclear markets: Egypt and Turkey each have 4 reactors under construction, while South Korea continues to expand its fleet more gradually.
