Europe Leads the World in Industrial Precision Components

Europe dominates the global supply of actuators, a component that produces movement and is used in robotic joints, for example. The continent is thereby expanding its role in the robotics sector, especially in humanoid robots. While the United States and China are the main players in producing these robots that are expected to take over an increasing number of tasks in factories and households, Europe is stronger on the precision component side of the supply chain.

Europe supplied a 34-percent share of global actuators in 2024, well ahead of China, which itself supplied 26.3 percent. This is according to data from Barclays. Germany stands out within Europe, as the country accounts for 10.7 percent of total trade flows, representing roughly one-third of Europe's supply share. It is followed, within Europe, by significantly smaller contributions from countries such as Switzerland (3.8 percent) and Italy (3.7 percent). However, higher shares came out of Mexico (9 percent), Japan (5.4 percent) and the United States (5.1 percent).

This structure highlights a high level of industrial concentration, with individual countries like Germany, China and Mexico as well as Europe as a whole playing pivotal roles in the robotics value chain. At the same time, the expertise required for programming and software development for these robots is concentrated primarily in China and the USA.

The close integration of European industry players with one another has likely been a decisive competitive advantage as established supply chains from the automotive sector helped scale complex systems more rapidly. The focus on the auto industry, especially in Northern Mexico, also put the country on the map in terms of actuator trade. Should the demand for humanoid robots rise, both locales could leverage their strengths in precision engineering to secure a leading position as a supplier to this global market.
