Console Gaming
PlayStation Beats Nintendo and Xbox
The Playstation 5 is the top dog for U.S. consoles, with 46 percent of respondents who regularly play video games using the device. Nintendo's Switch, soon to be the world's most sold console, came second with 33 percent saying the same. Its follow-up model, the Switch 2, is already reaching 17 percent of gamers, while older Playstation models also still reach a significant share of the gaming population, for example the Playstation 4 at a high 27 percent. This is according to Statista Consumer Insights.
The Xbox by Microsoft is also seeing relatively high popularity in the U.S., with 23 percent gaming on the Xbox One and 21 percent using the Xbox Series X/S.
Overall demand for gaming consoles recently weakened as consumers cut back on non-necessary spending during the cost-of-living crisis. During the Covid-19 pandemic, gaming and gaming consoles boomed, leading to empty shelves for the Playstation 5 (released 2020) and giving even older consoles like the Switch 1 (first released in 2017) another boost.
