U.S. Car Imports from Mexico on the Rise

Despite Donald Trump’s threats to reduce the U.S.-Mexico trade deficit by implementing punitive tariffs on cars produced in Mexico, imports from the neighbouring country have surged since the president’s inauguration in January.

As data published by the Mexican Automobile Industry Association reveals, 1.16 million light vehicles were exported to the U.S. in the first half of the year, accounting for an increase of 15.6 percent compared to the same period in 2016.

With 1.51 million light vehicles exported from Mexico to all countries until end of June in total, the vast majority (76 percent) of cars went to the U.S. However, the increase in Mexican automobile exports comes as American car sales fell 2.1 percent compared to last year.
